Happy New Year! Welcome to our January accessible events blog. As we step into the start of the New Year, the focus is often on fresh starts and new experiences. We believe that everyone should be able to enjoy the best our community has to offer, regardless of disability or access need. To help you plan your month, we’ve put together a list of 6 accessible events that ensure everyone can join the fun.
1) Cinderella
Richmond Theatre
Running until 4th January

Accessibility

For the show, the lights are dimmed, for a relaxed atmosphere, and quiet spaces are available for those who need a break from the show.

2) Hogwarts in the Snow
Warner Bros Studios
Running until 18th January
If you are still in the festive mood, come and visit the iconic sets of Warner Bros Studios as each of the scenes are transformed for winter with Christmas trees in the Great Hall, flying witches and inviting fireplaces. Accessibility
The venue offers relaxed tours for those with Autism and sensory needs.
Companion Tickets
One free companion ticket is available for each paying disabled visitor. Disabled visitors are required to provide proof of disability. If you have any questions, the visitor service team can be contacted on 0800 640 4550, or you can fill in their online contact form.

3) National Portrait Gallery
20th January
3pm - 4.30pm
The National Portrait Gallery is hosting The Collection, a dedicated event designed specifically for blind and partially sighted visitors. This session offers a unique opportunity to explore the gallery’s iconic works through professional audio description and a hands-on tactile workshop.

Accessibility
The venue is committed to making it's visitor experiences accessible as possible for disabled people. All their entrances have step-free access, including their cafe, restaurant and shop. They have the following facilities available.
Wheelchairs and Scooters - A limited number of manual, self-propelled wheelchairs and walkers are available to borrow free of charge. If you require mobility equipment, it's best to book these in advance of your visit. Email info@npg.org.uk or call them on 020 7306 0055.
Assistance Dogs - They are welcome to the gallery. A water bowl and toilet are available for your dog.
4) Winter Lights
20th – 31st January 5pm – 10pm Everyday
Canary Wharf, London
To celebrate it’s 10th year, Canary Wharf’s winter lights return, which will showcase the work by artists from around the world. The theme is Dreamscape, taking visitors on a journey of escapism with a sense of inspiration and connection.
Accessibility

5) Making Apps and websites accessible
21st January 12pm – 1pm
Online Event
Join Digital Pathfinders for their free lunch and learn webinar as they explore digital accessibility and what it means, why it matters and how small changes can make a big difference for disabled people. They will look at the common barriers faced by people with sight loss and other access needs, as well as provide you with the tools you need to make your content accessible and inclusive. 6) Mencap
London Winter Walk 24th or 25th January
Oval Cricket Ground
Join Mencap for the London Winter Walk. The event starts and finishes at the iconic Oval Cricket Ground. It’s a fantastic way to see the capital’s historic sights while supporting and fundraising for people with a learning disability. There are a few different distances you can choose from to suit your pace and ability.
Choose Your Distance
- 10km Loop: A great mid-distance walk through the heart of London.
- Half Marathon (21km): Choose between the East Loop or West Loop.
- Full Marathon (42km): A figure-of-eight route for those looking for a full-day challenge.
- Family Fun 5K (Sunday only): A shorter, celebratory loop perfect for all ages.
Accessibility
- Accessible 5K: The Sunday 5km route is specifically highlighted as wheelchair accessible, following flat paths along the Thames with views of Big Ben and Parliament.
- Supportive Environment: The event is strictly walking, meaning there’s no pressure to run. You can take your time and soak in the views of London’s historic bridges.
- Facilities: The Oval serves as a central hub with accessible facilities. Rest stops along the longer routes include snacks, drinks, toilets, and medics.
- Refuel in Comfort: All participants get hot food and a medal at the finish line back at the Oval.
